Live Review: 97X Next Big Thing – BayCare Sound, Clearwater, FL – December 7, 2024

It has been a longstanding holiday tradition for folks in Tampa Bay to attend the 97X Next Big Thing. This year marks the 23rd anniversary of the festival, which showcases up-and-coming bands in the indie alt-rock music scene. On Saturday, December 7th, the festival featured All-American Rejects, Something Corporate, Dayglow, Judah & the Lion, Gigi Perez, Jonah Kagen, and local bands at the BayCare Sound, Clearwater, Florida.

Rock At Night arrived at the outdoor theater on a chilly Florida afternoon. It was time to drag out the puffer jackets since it was in the 60s and expected to drop to the low 50s in the evening. At 4:45 pm, the 7-piece band Judah & the Lion appeared on the stage to tout their new album The Process, which delves into the topic of mental health. I saw them a few years back, and the music was more folk and reminiscent of Mumford & Sons. I really like their grittier and harder style, and every song off of The Process is a banger.

With two hurricanes in a row in the last month, Tampa Bay has been left wondering if 97X’s annual Next Big Thing would even happen this year. This morning, Tampa Bay’s darling alt-rock radio station announced the long-awaited lineup.

The one-day festival (a return to its original form, trotted back out at last year’s iteration) will see the All-American Rejects serve as headliner, along with Andrew McMahon’s newly reformed rock outfit Something Corporate, and Dayglow, an up-and-coming indie-pop project with singer-songwriter Sloan Struble at the helm. And as per usual, the winner of an annual, locals-only Battle Of The Bands at Tampa’s Seminole Hard Rock and Casino will kick the day off.

Tickets to see the 23rd annual 97X Next Big Thing at Clearwater’s The BayCare Sound on Saturday, Dec. 7 are now on sale, and start at $37.50.

The last time Tyson Ritter and friends swung into town was an August 2023 stop at the ol’ Gary amphitheater for a shitshow of an opening night to the band’s Wet Hot All-American Summer tour, which also featured New Found Glory and The Get Up Kids. Luckily, knowing how well-organized and planned out Next Big Thing is year after year, there’s really n

Great except...

Wonderful except for where your employees have chosent to place the rental chair storage units. Those units obstruct vision for anyone sitting center of lawn (GA tickets). Everything was wonderful except the obstruction of being able to see the stage & the party happening in the pit due to storage for rental chairs?!! I mean come on, the Amphitheater & fairground lawns are so massive I am positive they can find a much excel place for those storage units to go that wont obstruct vision of the events happening onstage. Being in GA (we are already viewing from nosebleed seats) the least y'all could do is make it not as hard to see what's happening on stage, especially when that is the only reason we are there. I would've left 5 stars, if not for that issue & the fact I had seen many complaints about the same issue in multiple reviews. Hopefully they listen to one of us!!
