Next Mile Meals are made short carb for ketogenic dieters, but omnivores can add their have carbs to create a hearty meal for one or enough to share for two. While I enjoyed test eating the dinners I've previously reviewed, this breakfast offering came up brief for me. Flavor and texture turned me off as I'll describe in the detailed review.
Pros
- Visually appealing
- Pleasant aroma
- Moderate packaging
Cons
- Bland initial texture
- Giving way to a mouth complete of pepper bits
- Denver omelette with beef instead of ham
- Generally lacking in flavor other than grassy pepper
Next Mile Meals specializes in low carb meals for the ketogenic adventurer because it grew out of one hiker's try to stay on the diet while hiking the Pacific Crest Trail back in 2017. The meals she made for her hike were well reviewed by other hikers along the footpath mooching bites. After the hike those meals were tweaked into the products they sell today. I've previously reviewed their Buffalo Ranch Chicken dinner and an Italian Meatball dinner, but today we'll dig into their Denver Omelette breakfast.

Tried out some of the Next Mile meals that Brian Curtis suggested for low carb / keto options. I like that they are legit single serving meals, unlike so called 2 serving meals which are closer to 1.5 servings, leaving you too full or wanting more. My biggest complaint so far is the hydration issues. There is a heavy emphasis on meat, it's Keto after all, but the chunks need to be diced smaller so they will hydrate properly. Cajun Jambalaya https://www.nextmilemeals.com/products/cajun-jambalaya I think this would be much better with sausage, which would probably hydrate better. The thick chunks of pork were dry and crunchy due to hydration issues. The flavor was just OK, could use more tomato flavor. Coconut Curry Chicken https://www.nextmilemeals.com/products/curry-chicken The thick chunks of chicken did not hydrate well. Could use more curry flavor. I ordered 2 of these so will try it again, adding some ahmed pickle to boost the flavor / spice and reheat it to help with hydration. Steak Omele KETOGENIC BACKPACKING MEALSReady to break away from the dehydrated rice and beans? Tired of the processed carbs and starches you typically find in stores? Craving great-tasting meals that use healthy ingredients and carefully crafted spice flavors? Our keto backpacking meals offer day-to-day variety while still allowing you to keep to your macros and nutrition goals, whether you’re camping with friends or tackling a thru-hike.When Jessie decided to hike the Pacific Crest Trail in 2017, figuring out food was her biggest logistical challenge. “Can I eat keto and do the hike?” Designing and creating these meals was her answer to that. After a few weeks of eating them day after day, she surprised herself when she realized, “These are better than what everyone else is eating, and people keep asking if I have any extras to share with them.” These meals have stood up to the ultimate taste test: could you eat the same six dinners, day after day, week after week, for five months? We’ve chosen our favorite recipes, tweaked the spices, and experimented with new packaging. We’re ready to pack these meals up and ship them to you so you can get your outdoor adventures under way. With If you've ever walked into an MEC or an REI to get backpacking food, you've undoubtedly walked up and down rows and rows of carb/sugar-laden dehydrated backpacking meals with not a scrap of food that's suitable for a keto hiker other than the odd bag of moon cheese. This is a problem to which Jessie, founder of Next Mile Meals, whom I interviewed on my blog a couple of weeks back, set out to provide a solution. Jessie conceived her entire line of backpacking meals with the keto hiker in mind, dehydrated, boil-in-bag meals that are high fat, low carbs, moderate protein. Her first 6 dinner entrees that she released were recipes that she ate on the trail herself on her hike of the Pacific Crest Trail, which she tweaked over the 2600+ miles she travelled. Now her company also offers two breakfast meals as well, and she's working on adding keto trail snacks in the future too. Full disclosure: Jessie offered me one free entree and a discount on any others I wanted to order. I ended up trying three of them, Italian Meatball, Buffalo Ranch Chicken and Sausage Scramble. Next Mile Meal Trail Test #1: Buffalo Ranch ChickenThe first one I tried was the Buffalo Ranch Chicken. The nigh Eating & NutritionAre your meals Gluten Free?
