Next step for pregnancy after sonohysterography
What to Expect From a Sonohysterogram
A sonohysterogram is a transvaginal ultrasound that uses saline (salt water) to evaluate the contour of the uterine cavity. The goal is to make sure your uterine cavity is a healthy and unobstructed place for a pregnancy to grow.
During this procedure at our Las Vegas fertility center, we insert a soft catheter through the cervix using a speculum. The speculum is then removed and a transvaginal ultrasound probe is inserted. Under real-time imaging, we then send normal saline through the catheter in order to slowly fill the uterine cavity like a balloon. This test allows us to see small abnormalities in the uterine lining.
It is important to confirm that you are not pregnant during this exam so it is done after your menstrual bleeding has stopped.
What is the purpose of a sonohysterogram?
A sonohysterogram is a routine part of most infertility work-ups at our Las Vegas fertility center. It allows our team to get a close look at the endometrial cavity. On a regular transvaginal ultrasound, we can see the thickness of the endometrial lining. However, there can be small findings like polyps, fibroids, scar tissue or a uterine septum th
What Happens After My Initial Fertility Appointment?
You have done it. By having your initial fertility appointment, you’ve taken an important step in your fertility journey. You have probably been anticipating this moment for quite some time—the opportunity to begin your family. So what happens next?
After Your Initial Fertility Appointment
What happens now that my first appointment is over?
The first step is an initial fertility workup on yourself and your partner, if applicable. Tests such as bloodwork, hysterosalpingogram (HSG), sonohysterogram (SHG), hysteroscopy, and/or endometrial biopsy help us determine the best treatment path for you.
Once you have finished your initial testing, you will have a follow-up appointment with one of our physicians to review the results and go over next steps. We will develop a customized treatment plan for your unique needs, incorporating the latest in assisted reproductive therapies.
Any additional testing and procedures are pending the diagnosis and treatment plan from your physician.
If I have questions, who do I contact? How?
After your initial fertility appointment, you will be supported by a dedicated care team.
Sonohysterography
Hysterosonography, also called sonohysterography, uses sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of the uterus and help diagnose many problems, including unexplained vaginal bleeding, infertility, and repeated miscarriages. Hysterosonography is performed very much like a gynecologic exam. Your doctor will insert a speculum into your vagina and insert a catheter into the cavity of the uterus. Using a small tube inserted into the vagina, your doctor will inject a minor amount of sterile saline into the cavity of the uterus and study the lining of the uterus using the ultrasound transducer. Ultrasound does not exploit ionizing radiation, has no established harmful effects, and provides a clear picture of soft tissues that don't show up adv on x-rays.
It is best to perform hysterosonography immediately after your period and within 10 days after the first day of your period to minimize the risk of infection and unintended loss of a very initial pregnancy. Little or no unique preparation is required for this procedure. Inform your doctor if there's a possibility you are pregnant. Leave jewelry at house and wear loose, comfortable clothing. You may be asked to wear a gown.
What if a simple test could change your entire fertility journey, saving you years of false hope and disappointment?
That’s why getting a saline sonogram before IVF is so highly recommended. This diagnostic tool could save you time, money, and emotional strain by revealing uterine abnormalities that might prevent successful implantation.
If you’ve been struggling with failed cycles, a saline sonogram could finally provide the answers you’ve been looking for.
And if those answers reveal that carrying a pregnancy may not be possible, you still have options. Fill out our form to learn how surrogacy can succeed where IVF may fail.
Do I Need a Saline Sonogram Before IVF?
A saline sonogram before IVF, also known as a saline infusion sonogram (SIS) or sonohysterography, is a specialized ultrasound that gives your doctor a clearer view of the uterus.
It’s often recommended before beginning IVF to check for hidden abnormalities that could interfere with embryo implantation.
Here’s how it works: a small amount of sterile saline (saltwater) is introduced into the uterus through a thin catheter. This saline expands the uterus slightly, giving the ultrasound waves a clearer fi
Understanding the sonohysterogram and its role in fertility
At Markham Fertility Centre (MFC) we offer many testing options, one of which is a sonohysterogram (SHG), also known as a saline infusion sonogram (SIS) or sono for short. The sonohysterogram is a test that we do as part of the initial workup for somebody who is looking to get pregnant. If somebody is thinking about freezing their eggs, or is looking at becoming an egg donor, we don’t typically order this test. But, in a situation where somebody is trying to get pregnant or wants to be pregnant, then it’s a commonly ordered test. Now let’s answer a few of the common questions about sonohysterograms:
- What is a sonohysterogram or sono?
- Is a sono painful?
- What do you look for in a sono?
- What are the risks of a sono?
- What to expect after a sono
- When to schedule a sono
- How long should you wait after a sono to have intercourse?
- How often is a sono done?
- How long after an ectopic can you do a sono?
What is a sonohysterogram or sono?
A sono is done on-site at MFC, at Care Imaging by one of the gynecologists, and the ultrasound department. We use a little catheter that is inserted in through the cer
