Our latest drama obsession is Channel 4's newest thriller series The Couple Next Door, which tells the story of two couples living on the same street who become, "sexually entangled in a way that will change their lives forever".

The Couple Next Door stars Eleanor Tomlinson, Sam Heughan, Alfred Enoch and Jessica De Gouw and is based on a Dutch series of the same name. As the six episodes unfold things start to get seriously messy, with partner swaps, surprise pregnancies, a creepy stalker and a criminal sub-plot involving Danny (Sam Heughan).

The tangled web of secrets in Starz‘s thrilling drama, The Couple Next Door, finally reached a breaking point as Danny (Sam Heughan) faced the metaphorical music with his wife, Becka (Jessica De Gouw).

After she learned about his secret son, Becka was further clued into the fact that Danny’s been involved with shifty side jobs at work and engaged in a secret tryst with their neighbor Evie (Eleanor Tomlinson) that led to an unplanned pregnancy. When Evie leaves her husband, Pete (Alfred Enoch), behind following the pregnancy revelation, she takes up in a cabin on her parents’ property and calls Danny, claiming she’s being held captive by her father.

Together, Danny and Becka drive to check on Evie, only to discover she’s completely fine. But Evie believes that she and Danny are in love and will be together, which is something Becka and Danny both know isn’t true.

The finale begins in a flashback, with Mia Hildegard/Kasia (Aggy K. Adams) celebrating her 16th birthday. Her parents gave her a necklace with a key on it. Armed police raid the house and arrest her parents for stealing money. Kasia unlocks a metal box to find it filled with cash and buries it. A woman informs her that she will enter child protective services. She has a sexual relationship with her therapist, Isak (Pal Sverre Hagen). At 18, she leaves CPS. Isak gives her a passport in exchange for the cash box key. In the present, she denies it was her intention to hide from him. He asks if she is happy to see him. She doesn’t respond. He locks the door on his way out. The next morning, Alan (Hugh Dennis) asks Jacob Roberts (Sam Palladio) and Charlotte “Lottie” Roberts (Annabel Scholey) about Mia. Jacob tells her about her fiancé, Isak. Alan rings the doorbell and bangs on the door. Isak won’t let Mia leave her room. Alan calls the police but when they ask for his name, he ends the call.

The Couple Next Door Review: I Wanted To Like Starz's Home Thriller But It Kept Losing Focus

The Couple Next Door attempts to lure us in with a thrilling tale of secrecy and distrust, only to overload on hollow tensions. While the drama is great, there is far too much going on in the six-episode series for anything to stand out, but the acting is decent and the chemistry among the cast is fluid. However, the result is a muddled thriller series that races to a convoluted end.

When Evie (Eleanor Tomlinson) and Pete (Alfred Enoch) move into a new neighborhood, they form an instant connection with some friendly neighbors. However, it isn't long before the friendship takes an unexpected spin and things get out of hand. Meanwhile, there is also a cult religion subplot, a mob storyline, multiple romances, a creepy neighbor, and so much more to keep the behavior going from one twisted moment to the next.

Predictably, things only went from bad to worse for most of our characters. Becka finally challenged Danny over his secrets, Evie tried to lure Danny out to join her at a secret location, and the breakdown in his relationship finally caused Pete to snap. At least there's a brighter future on the cards for Jean!
