“The Angel of Vengeance” (Pendergast #22) is part of a quartet of books — the early “Cabinet of Curiosities” (2002) and numbers 20/21 of the Pendergast books, “Bloodless” and “The Cabinet of Dr. Leng.” In the previous two installments, there were also other investigations (that had brought Agent Coldmoon on as Pendergast’s partner), but this book starts (and partially repeats) where the last book and its cliffhanger left off. The authors have promised this is definitely the last part of the arc — Pendergast will apparently be freed in book 23 to take up a different case confounding the FBI.

I’m a solid fan of Agent Aloysius, but I ended up re-reading “The Cabinet of Dr.Leng” prior to jumping into this novel. The authors do an excellent job of refreshing your memory if you don’t do the same, but this is also not a book that could be a standalone. You need the complex backstory to truly enjoy it. Most of the narrative takes place in the 1880s and regulars D’Agosta, Constance, Proctor, Diogenes and the villain Enoch Leng all have large parts. It’s not just a Pendergast story and it is missing the usual police procedural (no Coldmoon, too bad) that’s been embedded in the previous

Preston & Child’s Next Agent Pendergast Novel Coming to Bookstores in August

On August 13, 2024, FBI Special Agent Pendergast returns to bookstores in Angel of Vengeance, the exciting new novel from  New York Times bestselling authors Preston & Child.

Agent Pendergast, who, even after twenty-two books, remains a fiercely popular character, first appeared in the 1995 novel Relic, co-authored by the prolific writing team of Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. Most recently, Pendergast was seen alongside Constance Greene in The Cabinet of Dr. Leng, which was released in January of 2023. That’ll create an almost twenty-month gap between books when Angel of Vengeance is finally available. Thankfully, with a story that’s said to pit Pendergast and Greene against the most dangerous series killer walking the streets of NYC, it sounds like Preston & Child’s latest will have been well worth the wait.

The series melds crime, horror, and psychological suspense with a deep dive into science, history, and the unexplained, creating a world where every detail might hide a crucial clue—or a deadly danger.

What makes the Pendergast series stand out is its blend of complex traits development and meticulously crafted plots. The relationship between Pendergast and his loyal sidekick, Lieutenant D'Agosta, is a key element that adds emotional depth, balancing the darker, more atmospheric narrative with moments of genuine camaraderie. Last year I had the very great pleasure of reading Extinction by Douglas Preston.  An outstanding thriller set in a private nature park filled with cloned woolly mammoths and other prehistoric creatures, I was lured in by Extinction’s cool premise but came away deeply thrilled by how crazy and fun things got, as an unlikely group of antagonists caused all manner of over-the-top carnage  I loved every second I spent reading Extinction, and it was one of the more entertaining novels of 2024.  Due to this, I decided to keep an eye out on more books from Preston and was very intrigued by his next release, Badlands, which he has once again written with his long-time collaborator Lincoln Child.
