Subriel matias next fight 2025
For many Puerto Rican boxers looking to rise to prominence, New York has often served as their home inside the squared circle.
Hall of Famers and multiple-division champions Felix Trinidad and Miguel Cotto made Madison Square Garden their home base. Amanda Serrano will headline at Madison Square Garden for a second time on July 11 when she faces undisputed junior welterweight champion Katie Taylor for a third time. Ascending Puerto Rican stars Edgar Berlanga and Xander Zayas have fought in the Big Apple on numerous occasions.
Subriel Matias of Fajardo, Puerto Rico, hasn’t fought in New York once through his 24 fights.
That’ll change on July 12 for Matias, a former IBF junior welterweight titleholder, when he faces Alberto Puello for his WBC junior welterweight title on The Ring’s pay-per-view show at the Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, New York. With Matias (22-2, 22 KOs) set to step into the ring in New York for the first time in his career, his co-promoter, Dmitriy Salita, believes his fighter will have an opportunity to cement himself as the next star to come from Puerto Rico.
“To create real Puerto Rican stars, you need to connect them to the New York City communi
Subriel Matias vs Gabriel Gollaz Valenzuela eliminator reportedly set for March 1st in Puerto Rico
Salvador Rodriguez, confirming an earlier report from Fernando Barbosa, brings word that super lightweight contenders Subriel Matias and Gabriel Gollaz Valenzuela will meet in a previously ordered IBF final eliminator on March 1st in Puerto Rico.
The winner would be in line for a crack at newly crowned champion Richardson Hitchins, who’s reportedly pursuing a unification bout with WBO titlist Teofimo Lopez. Lopez infamously rejected a March clash with Matias (21-2, 21 KO) that was by all accounts nearly finalized.
Gollaz (30-3-1, 17 KO) doesn’t offer that level of prestige, but as I said before, he should still make for a good fight. He’s durable, aggressive, and good enough to push Matias to the limit if the hometown favorite isn’t in peak form. That’s a genuine possibility here; Matias looked listless in his loss to Liam Paro and got rocked early by the unheralded Roberto Ramirez in last November’s comeback fight.
Hopefully the broadcast will prove as easy to watch as the fight itself.
Teofimo Lopez vs Subriel Matias reportedly being finalized for March 15
Teofimo Lopez had been actively pursuing a fight against welterweight titleholder Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis, but ESPN now reports he’s in the midst of cementing a deal to defend his 140 lb WBO title against former IBF titleholder Subriel Matias. The fight is being targeted for March 15 to headline an ESPN+ PPV event.
Lopez (21-1, 13 KOs) has one five straight fights since losing to George Kambosos in 2021, but that includes wins over Sandor Martin and Jamaine Ortiz which weren’t exactly dominant performances. Lopez most recently won a wide unanimous decision against unheralded Steve Claggett this past June.
Meanwhile Matias (21-2, 21 KOs) had a terminator-like reputation in the 140 lb division, right up until he lost his belt to Liam Paro in a fight he was a considerable favorite to win. That proved to be major setback for Matias, who since stepped down in competition to take a stoppage win over Roberto Ramirez in November.
If this fight gets across the finish line it’ll be one that sure to feature a lot of action, but it’s questionable how well it will serve as a PPV
