About the ACCUPLACER
The Next-Generation ACCUPLACER is a group of untimed, multiple choice, computer-delivered tests that assess skill in three key areas:
Reading
The Next-Generation Reading test measures the ability to derive meaning of words and phrases in the context of short and extended passages that vary in content, writing modes, and complexities.
Passages on the check cover a range of content areas (including science, history, and literary nonfiction), writing modes (informative, argument, and narrative), and complexities (relatively easy to very challenging).
Four broad knowledge and skills categories are assessed:
- Information and Ideas: reading closely, determining central ideas and themes, summarizing, and understanding relationships
- Rhetoric: analyzing word choice, text structure, point of view, purpose, and arguments
- Synthesis: analyzing multiple texts
- Vocabulary

Writing
The Next-Generation Writing test evaluates the ability to revise and edit multiparagraph texts. Questions cover two knowledge and skills categories:

Test Fees
Must pay application fees:
- Valencia Student: No Charge 1st time, $10 Retake fee per section
- Non-Valencia Student: **Not applicable for Dual Enrollment Students
Technical difficulties inherent with the internet, software or transmission may occur during your testing experience and are unpredictable. If unexpected technical difficulties occur, Proctors will make every attempt to promptly resume your assessment. Extended delays in testing may require rescheduling.
The ACCUPLACER Next Generation
The ACCUPLACER Next Generation is an entry-level placement test for degree seeking students in the Florida College System (FCS) according to Florida Statutes, Section 1008.30, Rule 6A-10.0315. This test will help determine your initial placement in English, reading and mathematics courses.
You could be exempt from this placement test if you meet any of the following:
- Started the 9th grade in 2003 or after and graduated from a Florida High School with a standard diploma
- Are an active duty member of any branch of the United States Armed Services
- Provide official ACT, CPT, and/or SAT scores less than two years old that place you in college-level course work at Val
Next-Generation Accuplacer
Next-Generation Accuplacer exams are designed to evaluate skill in mathematics, reading and writing.
Students are allowed to take the placement test a maximum amount of three times in a calendar year. Students must wait 14 days and pay a $30.00 retest fee for the second and third attempt of the placement test. This fee is payable at the FDTC Business Office or at the Testing center (cash only, exact change).
Tests are untimed. Average test taker completes full test in 3 hours.
- Students must show a photo ID prior to taking any test.
- Test takers should allow sufficient time to complete testing within hours of operation.
- Students are discouraged from bringing electronic devices including cell phones into the Testing Center.

Testing and Assessment
MDC students have a total of two placement test attempts (one initial attempt and one retest) on each subtest of the placement test for initial placement prior to enrollment in any course within that subject area. Prior to the 2nd attempt students must complete a test preparation option. After the 2nd attempt students must complete a prescribed remediation option and receive permission to retest from the Developmental Education and/or Mathematics Chairperson. Successful completion of Boot Camp (Shark Academy) courses REA 0014 – Reading, EDU 0016 – Mathematics, or EDU 0017 – Writing may be used in lieu of receiving chairperson permission. Enrollment will be determined at the 100% refund date. Placement scores are valid for two years. After the two-year period, since scores are no longer valid for placement, students who have not yet started a subject area are free to retake the test two additional times as long as the score(s) have not been used for placement.
Students who started developmental education courses (REA, ENC, or MAT) in a subject area may only be referred for retesting on a case-by-case basis by faculty or an academic advis
