Cheap La Jolla Cruisers?

I bought one of the Next La Jolla cruisers from Wal-Mart for my mom for Mother's Day. She's 55 years antique and hasn't ridden in probably 20 years, since we used to ride together as a kid. She wanted one to go to the bike trails with Magoo and me, so this was a cheaper option to start her out with. She doesn't do long rides, but she has ridden it with me on our local bike trail and hasn't had any problem with it at all. It's very comfy, but the only downfall is it's single speed with no hand brakes (what is that, coaster brakes I think? Sorry I'm a newbie without all the lingo!). Other than that, she keeps up with me just fine on my mountain bike. I would take it to a bike shop to possess it looked over to construct sure it's assembled properly before riding for any distance. Of course, regular maintenance is a must just as with any other bike. My Mom loves hers, and rides everyday. We will probably move her up to a better brand if she decides to get into it hardcore, but that won't be for a while.

Next Lajolla aluminum frame project

Here is a Next Lajolla single speed cruiser bike as sold by Mall-wart circa 2007 for I believe around $90.
Not lots of info about these bikes online.

Aluminum frame. Inherited from my brother, Unfinished project.

Threw some parts on it from the stash, then parked it.

What it looks like today,

Cockpit a little cramped - options, change seat post, gooseneck and shorter cranks...

Long time lurker - 1st post Next La Jolla BMX beach cruiser build

I love this forum! I see so many builds and inspiration here and I'm grateful for all the experience and knowledge shared here.

This Next LaJolla beach cruiser was a freebie from a garage clean out. Also included was a mated blue framed ladies LaJolla beach cruiser (my wife rides it), a 20" Kent girls BMX black/pink thing, and an old school Columbia Pro Am TC-9! Quite a haul, for the price of a van ride.

I've done some very easy entry level mods to the cruiser including: new Kenda Flames, generic rat trap pedals, generic flame grips on the bars and stem from the TC-9, the saddle from a Jamis Aragon hybrid, and a bell

This bike fits me perfectly, it light weight, and the gearing (36/16) is perfect for me. There is no hill I haven't been able to master, yet. I'm 50 and fatter than I need to be, and work from home at my desk ALL DAY, and the exercise has been welcomed, to say the least. I also have impressed my kids that dear old dad can ride so much better than them.

Having ridden it in this configuration for almost a year now, I'm ready for a mild upgrade to the drivetrain. I

next la jolla

My wife and I bought a couple of the Next La Jolla step through frame bicycles about two years ago. I have fairly good feelings about them; they seem to have really surprisingly well built frames: TIG welded aluminum. I would rank the quality right up there with many of the big name aluminum frame bicycles. The frames on our bikes are built by Kent bicycle company, but I don’t know if they are still building the frames for the Next La Jolla bikes now, or not.

My wife and I were in Wal-Mart about a week ago and sadly the Next La Jolla bikes seem to have several changes on them… like painted handlebars, welded painted gooseneck, cheaper looking paint job on the frame, and I could be wrong, because it’s hard to tell, looking at it in the store, but the frame looks smaller on the bike to me now on the new ones (ours are19 inch frames). Our two bikes had nice chrome handlebars, and gooseneck, and a beautiful anodized looking blue aluminum frame, but that was two years ago, and Wal-Mart does seem to have a way of chipping away at quality once they have something that sells well…

The first thing I did when we bought our bikes was change the grips, (
