Island Cook Departs Next Level Chef with Praise from Gordon Ramsay
Next Level Chef contestant Ryan Scanlon, who first discovered his passion for cooking as a teenager at Alchemy in Edgartown, was eliminated from the reality cooking show on Thursday, but got commendations from the judges.
The Vineyard-raised chef cooked his way to the final six on Gordon Ramsay’s hit competition produced by FOX. He was competing in the professional category and vying for the $250,000 prize that comes with a year-long mentorship.
After preparing a filet mignon, with the bone still in, the judges determined it was overcooked. Mr. Scanlon said on the show that steaks are his expertise, but his comfortability with the filet was ultimately what hurt him.
“It’s just me getting in my own way which is crushing me,” Mr. Scanlon said before he headed into the elimination round.
Mr. Scanlon proceeded into a 25-minute cookoff against competitor Megan Keno. The challenge was to cook an entire fish, something ingrained in Mr. Scanlon, who as a teenager cooked many fish caught in Vineyard’s waters.

Vineyarder Shines on Next Level Chef
Six years ago Ryan Scanlon was a Vineyard teenager working summers at Alchemy restaurant in Edgartown.
Now the 23-year-old chef is appearing on national television as a contestant on Next Level Chef, one of the most watched cooking competitions, hosted by Gordon Ramsay.
In a recent episode, Mr. Scanlon tossed homemade ground veal ravioli in a searing hot pan. His eyes were laser focused on the stove as Mr. Ramsay yelled that there were four minutes left on the clock.
“Yes chef,” Mr. Scanlon replied as hot oil spattered his steady hands.

The round’s theme was Italian cuisine, and Mr. Scanlon won immunity for what the judges described as an ambitious dish executed with an excellent flavor profile.
Although he couldn’t reveal how far he continues in the competition, Mr. Scanlon said he is extremly proud of what he accomplished on the show.
Mr. Scanlon began his culinary journey at the regional high school, taking a cooking elective while in school.
